Houby History...

The International Houby Day Festival remains one of the Cicero-Berwyn area’s most favored pastimes. Drawing crowds not only from the town itself, but from nearby areas as well, the Houby Festival is perhaps one of the region’s most exciting events. Named “Houby” after the Czechoslovakian word for “mushroom”, the Houby festivities began in 1968 and exhibited much of the local culture of the town’s citizens, many of whom were of Czech decent. The festival continues as one of the town’s most esteemed annual events to this day, and has gone on to encompass numerous ethnicities and backgrounds in a stunning display of culture and exuberance for the entire community, and visitors, to share.

Houby Festivities will include our annual International Houby Queen Pageant, wherein our Houby Queen Contestants will display their talents and one will be crowned as Queen of the event, later to serve as the centerpiece for our traditional Houby Day Parade. The Pageant, Parade, and Carnival shall take place over the course of three days (Oct. 5 – Oct. 7) and visitors can expect to immerse themselves in food, fashion, and flair as they observe the local customs and peruse the wares sold by local vendors and craftspersons. As always, the International Houby Festival promises to be a thrilling time.
